The Treatment - How does it work?
You have already been hypnotised to smoke! The tobacco industry is really smart at doing this and you have been conditioned to reach for cigarettes when certain triggers fire off that craving. You don’t even have to think about it consciously, it’s a habit, you do it automatically – maybe with your morning coffee or tea, as an excuse to have a break from work, after dinner or with a drink, socialising with friends, on the telephone or at stressful moments.
This is because your unconscious mind has been convinced that you need cigarettes even when you really don’t. What hypnosis does is to reverse this decision in your unconscious mind. You will be re-conditioned to say ‘no I don’t smoke’ and once you have resisted the addiction to nicotine (this passes within 3 or 4 days) you can start to forget about smoking.
When you are hypnotised you will feel beautifully relaxed, both physically and mentally. It’s at that stage that together, we can convince your unconscious mind (and your permanent memory) that the decision that you have already made – to be a non-smoker – is the right one for you.
First of all you come to my clinic for a consultation. This lasts for about 45 minutes during which time I take a full case history and discuss your smoking habit with you in detail. I need to know when and why you started smoking, what you like about it now, what you don’t like about it, why you have decided you want to stop, what are the most difficult situations that might tempt you to start again etc.?
I will also explain my treatment, fully and you will have an opportunity to ask me any questions so that you can feel comfortable and confident about the process.
If, at the conclusion of the consultation, I feel that the moment is not right for you then I will be honest so that you don’t waste any more time or money. Alternatively, if you are uncertain about proceeding then we don’t need to go any further and you can go away and think it over. There is absolutely no pressure that I will put on you, to buy a treatment if you don’t want it.
The cost of the consultation is refundable if you do go ahead with treatment.
The treatment usually takes place about a week after the consultation. During this time I ask you to keep a ‘cigarette diary’ for discussion on the day you stop smoking. When that day comes, you return to the clinic for the hypnosis session lasting between 1½ and 2 hours.
During this time I also teach you strategies so that you can treat yourself to resist temptation when it arises. Just because you have decided to stop smoking doesn’t mean that the world around you will also stop! You will find that there are times (especially during the early days after stopping) when you will be challenged about whether or not you will buy cigarettes and smoke again and you will need to be prepared to deal with these challenges.
This is where I use techniques such as Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). Both of which are described in more detail at my other website: www.hypnosisinlondon.com.
Also (with your agreement) I can use aversion strategies to make you automatically think of cigarettes as the most disgusting food you could ever think of putting in your mouth! This is often effective with the ‘stubborn’ smokers who may have found, previously, that they were smoking without recall of putting cigarettes in their mouths. Once they associate a cigarette with: rotten raw liver, sour milk or Marmite (I get all sorts of suggestions!) this usually stops them in their tracks.
Lastly, I teach you self-hypnosis so that you can benefit from being calm and in control.
The main commitment from you is that you really must want to stop smoking, because I can’t make you do anything you don’t want to do.
